How to use CrashPlan but not suffer from using so much RAM memory

How to use CrashPlan but not suffer from using so much RAM memory

I use CrashPlan to backup my data as mentioned in a previous article its free for local backups and for sharing HDD space using multiple friends HDD space.  I have noticed that the RAM usage goes up in proportion to the number of files that you have selected to backup even during the time when the backups are disabled.  imageMy CrashPlan settings are set to backup only during the hours that Im not working on my PC and when Im connected to my home network (where my external HDD is connected).  Im also not working at those times so when CrashPlan is accessing the HDD it doesnt slow down my PC.
The settings to limit the time that CrashPlan does the backups can be found in the CrashPlan Desktop interface under Settings->Backup->Between Specified Times.  I have selected From 18:00 to 08:00 and ticked each day so that backups only happen at night daily.
image
I noticed that even when the backup was disabled, the CrashPlanService was using a lot of RAM memory (over 500MB) and I found my PC swapping to disc all the time which was slowing my PC down a bit of a waste!  So, I found a way to create a schedule that stopped the CrashPlanService just after 08h00 and start it again just before 18h00.

Creating a scheduled task to kill the service:
Open the Control Panel->Administrative Tools-> Task Scheduler
Click into Microsoft->Windows:
imageClick on Create Task:
imageEnter name: Turn OFF CrashPlan service, under Triggers tab:
imageUnder Actions tab: enter Program to run:  C:WindowsSystem32 askkill.exe
and under Add arguments enter:    /IM CrashPlanService.exe /F
imageClick OK to save the scheduled task.

Creating a scheduled task to start the service:
Click on Create Task:
imageEnter name: Turn ON CrashPlan service, under Triggers tab:
imageUnder Actions tab: enter Program to run:    C:WindowsSystem32 et.exe
and under Add arguments enter:    start CrashPlanService
image

Click OK to save the scheduled task.

Your tasks list should look like this:
image
You can test the tasks by right clicking the task and selecting Run:

With thanks to Scott Granneman for his blog that describes the steps to do this in Linux.

How to open hidden task manager to clear RAM and improve performance of your phone Nokia Asha

How to open hidden task manager to clear RAM and improve performance of your phone Nokia Asha

asha-503-task-manager
Source- The Mobile Indian

Nokia Asha phones that run on the New Nokia Asha Platform comes pre-installed with a bunch of apps that uses much of its internal memory. There are ways to remove pre-installed apps in older Asha phones but no working method  has been found yet for the phones running the new Asha OS.  With the last major OTA update, Nokia has removed some of the useless games and has included many other apps. And these cant be removed. Although this was a good move from their part but each users have their own tastes and preferences. The list of these default apps include Line, Wechat, Linkedin, Twitter, Nimbuz, OneDrive, NewsHunt and some utility apps like Pocket Word, Pocket Excel etc. Many users find these useless as for a normal person LinkedIn is not necessary. Many dont use Whatsapp, Wechat, Line and Nimbuz at a time. Many dont feel it good to view documents in a 3 inch screen and the Pocket apps(Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are not efficient enough to do their job. So all these factors make these apps useless and wastage of memory and makes the phones menu look crowded.

The messenger apps eat up a lot of RAM in the phone and by Lot of RAM, i meant the limited 64MB RAM. With the last update, the software got pushed to 14.0.4 in which the RAM management in the phone got improved. Now a simple task manager pops up with the option to close the apps that are currently running in background. Apps like Whatsapp and Xpress Browser always run in background once opened. This will remain opened till you switch off or restart the phone. So while using some apps like Wechat, Nimbuzz or browsing in UC browser, the heap memory decreases after some time and the task manager pops up. In this situation, you must close all the apps shown there to clear memory. This prevents the phone from getting overloaded. But Its quite annoying as we were in the middle of something and now we need to close the browser. The task manager cant be opened manually. It opens itself when a situation arises. So we are not able to check what all apps are opened in the background.

The new TASK MANAGER app given an end to this problem. The app helps to open the hidden task manager in the phone thus enabling us to close all background running apps whenever we want. In my opinion, this is a handy and a must-have app in your phone. I recommend you to save the file in the phone memory of your phone so that app will still be there even if you remove the memory card. Saving in the phones limited memory wont harm you in an way, because the app is just 16kb in size!
[ Please note that this is an app that runs only in Nokia devices running Asha Platform 14.0.4 or higher; Nokia 501, 500, 502, 503 and 230  ]
Download using UC Browser(recommended)

How to optimise RAM maximise performance on Android

How to optimise RAM maximise performance on Android

There we go if youre in a hurry to move on, thats a pretty easy takeaway! You see, after weeks of looking at tips and tricks and utilities and management schemes, Ive ended up with the conclusion that its extremely easy to get to the point where the things youre doing, and the apps youre buying to try and increase performance in your Android smartphone, are actively getting in the way. Both your way and that of the OS, which (at Android 4.x) is now sufficiently sophisticated to make a better fist of things than anything else we can think of here. Having said that, some explanation and a few extra tips should prove more illuminating

RAM (Random Access Memory) is the main thing to look at, of course. Short of extreme hackery in in terms of overlocking your phones processor (very definitely not for the faint hearted, or those who value their warranty!), the main performance factor in any smartphone is its RAM and whats using it. You see, applications and data that are (running or stored) in RAM are much faster to access than the same stored in flash memory (i.e. the phones internal disk or microSD).

The authors ageing Galaxy Nexus, with 300MB free RAM after booting, and optimised to within an inch of its life.!

So the ideal situation is to have all the applications you use the most in RAM at all times, for near instant switching (with the only remaining bottleneck being the devices processor). The likely problem with this is that your phones RAM is finite and, at some point, something large (e.g. a game) that you run will end up demanding lots of RAM and out go your core applications (Gmail, Twitter, Pocket Casts, etc.), with their states saved so that they can be restarted/resumed as exactly as possible in the near future. And, naturally, when it comes time to use one of your core applications again, this restart takes an awful lot longer than simply jumping to a fully running application in RAM.

Which brings us to two seemingly contradictory rules of thumb:

  1. have as much free RAM as possible (so that theres room to crank in new applications without disturbing any of your core apps that are already running)

  2. fill RAM as much as possible with running apps (so that as many core apps as possible can be available for instant switching)

In fact, these two rules dont fall foul of each other theyre both true and both relevant in a modern Android smartphone. The second rule is taken care of by the Android OS, which naturally fills RAM as new applications are started though a buffer of up to 100MB (or thereabouts) is usually tried for, so that theres always room for the OS and processor to breathe (work).

Though its tempting to suggest that the first rule is also taken out of user hands (hence my Do nothing crack at the top!), in fact there are things you might be able to do, that make a difference in day to day use. And no, I dont mean installing free up style utilities, which essentially kill background Android services to free RAM and ignore the fact that most of them get restarted almost immediately trust me, Ive tried a number of these apps and ultimately de-installed each.

Nor do I mean choose a phone with more RAM in the first place, though that is rather an obvious starting point if youre a power user then you should prize RAM over all else, even over processor speed. More RAM = better web page handling, larger games handled smoothly, quicker switching between applications, and so on.

There are in fact two main things you can bear in mind when setting up your Android smartphone, both of which have a significant effect on free RAM, especially if you have a 1GB (or less) device.

1. Exercise restraint in setting up homescreens. Yes, your device lets you have up to nine of the things, each of which could be stocked with several cool widgets, so its quite possible to end up with 20 or so widgets in place. Then add in a live wallpaper, for the ultimate in cool. Quite apart from such a homescreen map being too spread out to save you any time in the first place, its vital to understand that every widget is effectively a small application and requires RAM in order to exist and work (e.g. to display content). Ditto live wallpaper, which again is an Android application in its own right and can often use significant RAM.

Stick to a simple homescreen layout, maybe two or three, with a handful of your most valuable widgets, then use a static wallpaper (i.e. a still photo), and youll have more RAM for general Android application use.

2. Think about changing your homescreen/app-launcher altogether. If youre an out-of-the-box sort of person then you may not want to tinker with this, but there are definitely RAM savings to be made here. As an example, I did some tests, detailed below, on my (now ageing) Galaxy Nexus. Theres a caveat in that the numbers tended to jump around, depending on exact network conditions and what data was being handled in real time, etc, but the broadstrokes comparison does apply, I think.

In each case, I set up the appropriate launcher with approximately the same shortcut icons and the same widget loadout (Google Now, Simple Bitcoin, Brightness Level, and Free Memory, in my case) and then rebooted, waiting a few minutes for all the typical Android services to get started, do their initial thing and then calm down youd be amazed how much free RAM fluctuates in the first few minutes after a phone is restarted!

Launcher

Average free RAM after booting had finished

Google Now (the Google Experience, etc.)

265MB

Trebuchet (the default own-brand/stock launcher that comes with Cyanogen Mod)

308MB

Novalauncher

284MB

Apex Launcher

293MB

Note again (in the table) that I used the word average the numbers really did vary quite a bit, though there was a very definite difference between the Trebuchet launcher from Cyanogen, effectively the stock Android launcher from v4.1 or so and the (slightly) more bloated Google Now system that has been coming on recent Nexus devices and other Play Edition phones . However, as with most newer software, its written (and tested) with higher specification devices in mind, and so its relative bloat has gone unchecked.

Picking a launcher, here in Settings/Apps/All under Android 4.4.

Add the two bits of advice together and I reckon on a possible difference of up to 75MB of free RAM in both simplifying homescreens massively and switching from the Google Now launcher to Trebuchet (or Apex Launcher, for example), enough to make a significant difference on older hardware, at least.

Hopefully these insights and tips can you gain more free RAM in your own main smartphone and youll get a faster, smoother Android experience as a result. Comments welcome!
