How to Manually install an OTA update on your HTC device
How to Manually install an OTA update on your HTC device

Facts you need to know before continuing:
- This method has nothing to do with the "adb sideload" feature available on Android devices since Jelly Bean. It should work on every Android HTC device.
- Read about different software versions for the HTC devices here. Keep in mind that the OTA update must match the software version on your device. Each original OTA update.zip package has 2 different software versions in its name - the version of the software that must be currently installed on your device and the version of the software that your device will run after the update. For example:
OTA_M7_UL_JB43_SENSE55_MR_HTC_Europe_3.62.401.1-2.24.401.8_release_338160gxmo5sd9337kadux.zip
As you can see, 2.24.401.8 is the software version you must currently have installed to be able to run the OTA and 3.62.401.1 is the version of the software expected after the update. You cant flash an OTA update on a different software version to that expected by the OTA update for two main reasons:
- Formal reason - the OTA update.zip package checks if your system is running the expected software version before it starts to install the update:
assert(file_getprop("/system/build.prop", "ro.build.fingerprint") == "htc/htc_europe/m7:4.2.2/JDQ39/235216.8:user/release-keys");
This must match the following build fingerprint from the build.prop. If the versions dont match, the installation of the OTA package will be cancelled.ro.build.fingerprint=htc/htc_europe/m7:4.2.2/JDQ39/235216.8:user/release-keys
- Technical reason - OTA update.zip packages usually contain patches for the target files. This way OTA update doesnt have to be 1GB size, even if it is supposed to update the whole OS to the newer version. Patch files have an *.apk.p extension (f.g. Camera.apk.p) and each patch file must match the target file (f.g. Camera.apk). To make it possible, OTA update.zip package checks the MD5 checksum of each file on the system partition on your device:
And finally, if the MD5 is correct it applies the patch. All these commands are stored in META-INFcomgoogleandroidupdater-script of each OTA update.zip package. If the MD5 is incorrect, or at least one file is missing, the installation of the OTA package will be cancelled.assert(apply_patch_check("/system/app/Camera.apk","b3b79e40bad0b1bec5fb949ac5f8662f91bee714","5a5bf63e3d7c9de52a7d8d7a292e158263783844"));assert(apply_patch("/system/app/Camera.apk", "-",
b3b79e40bad0b1bec5fb949ac5f8662f91bee714, 4229394,
5a5bf63e3d7c9de52a7d8d7a292e158263783844,
package_extract_file("patch/system/app/Camera.apk.p")));
Now you are ready to manually apply the OTA update on your device. The method youll use is based on Android stock recovery.
- Make sure you have the stock (original) recovery flashed on your device
- Make sure youre running a completely unmodified operating system. Additional files like Superuser.apk or su binary are allowed, you just cant have any system files changed or removed (due to the MD5 check)
- Make sure you have a reasonable amount of battery charge remaining
- Make sure the OTA update youre about to install matches the software version on your device
- Copy the OTA update.zip package to your device (internal storage preferred)
- Turn OFF the device (make sure fastboot mode is disabled in settings)
- Hold your volume down and power keys until the bootloader starts up
- Using the volume keys, navigate down to RECOVERY and press power
- You are now in stock recovery mode. You should see nothing more than a (sometimes spinning) Android with the red exclamation mark above it (an empty black screen is also possible). Wait for a few seconds
- First hold volume up, then (with volume up held down) press power button to enter the main recovery menu. This keys combination may vary from device to device. Try different keys combination if the above one doesnt work (might be all three keys all together too)
- Navigate down to "apply from phone storage" text and press power to confirm
- Navigate to the location where you copied the OTA update.zip package and press power to confirm
- Wait (sometimes you might need to follow further instructions on the screen) until the update process is finished
- Once system is booted you should see a confirmation about the successfully flashed update.

How to update to Android N Developer Preview 2 manually using OTA downloads
How to update to Android N Developer Preview 2 manually using OTA downloads
Google today announced that Android N Developer Preview 2 is coming OTA to several Nexus devices in the coming days and weeks. If you like to get the latest from Google, you know that coming weeks could be a pretty long wait. Thankfully, you can head to the front of the line and install the over-the-air (OTA) update by following our quick guide

This guide assumes you already have the ADB tools installed on your computer. If you dont know how to do this or what this is, this guide probably isnt for you. If you need the ADB tools, head over to Googles developers site and download the Android SDK. Downloading the SDK and making sure ADB is correctly set up is probably the hardest part, but this guide is for those who have already done this.
Download the OTA
The first step in updating to Android Marshmallow using OTA files is to actually download the proper OTA image file for your device. Weve compiled a full list of currently-available Android N Developer Preview 2 download links straight from Googles servers to help you with that.
Prepare your Device
Once you have the OTA zip downloaded to your computer, reboot your device into its bootloader. To do this, power off your device and power it back on while holding the volume down button and the power button down simultaneously. You need to get into the recovery from here. Press the volume button down until you see Recovery mode then press the power button. This should present you with the below screen.

Lastly, when you see the green Android icon on the screen, you need to hold and power button down and then press and release release volume up button to reveal the menu. From that menu, select apply update from ADB and make sure your device is plugged into your computer if you havent already.
Install the OTA
Open up the command line on your computer (terminal for Mac, command prompt for Windows) and change the directory to the location of the OTA file (For example: cd /Users/<yourusername>/Downloads/). Now run the command adb sideload <name of the OTA file>. The name of the OTA file is going to be a long string of letters and numbers and will end with .zip.Once you see Install from ADB complete on your Android devices screen, simply reboot your device. Once youve successfully rebooted, you should have the latest release of Android on your Nexus.

HOW TO MANUALLY CREATE A BOOTABLE USB DISK FOR WINDOWS 7 8 10 UEFI LEGACY
HOW TO MANUALLY CREATE A BOOTABLE USB DISK FOR WINDOWS 7 8 10 UEFI LEGACY

Here is a tutorial on how to create a bootbale usb removable disk or flash for Windows 7, 8 or 10.
If you think an ISO file is a document for International Organization for Standardization, please stop reading here. :D
The UEFI substage is for those installing in the modern UEFI 64 bit systems, while the Legacy mode substage is for those installing in the former/old systems with non UEFI partitions.
STAGE 1
0: backup the files in the removable storage, to avoid unnecessary data loss.
1. Goto start, type CMD or Command Prompt, rick click and run as administrator or ctrl + shift + left click / Enter.

2. In the command prompt window, type:
diskpart

3. List Disk
(Note the drive number of your USB disk)
select disk #
(where # is the disk number).

4. Type Clean
NB. This will erase all partitions and data on the USB

5. Type create partition primary
6. Type List partition
NB: If you did not skip actions 1-5, you should see only one partition here, and you can skip to 8.
Note the partition # of the partition and
7. Select Partiton #
where # is the partition #

as can be seen from the image aboove, cause I did a clean command, I have only one partition and the partition is selected by default (the * beside the partition name), so the List partition and select partition is not needed; but for those who skipped to this stage as a result of having multiple partition on their harddrive, they will see multiple partitions and can select the one they wish to format and use as bootable.
8. format fs=fat32 quick

9. active
10. assign
11. Exit

12. double click on the ISO image; or open the iso image with windows explorer (Windows 8 & above) and copy its content directly into the flash, or extract the ISO image with any of your favourite extractors and paste its content into the USB disk.

IF UEFI ENVIRONMENT
If youre installing in a UEFI environment, If its the new Windows 10, you are done already, if it is a windows 8 ISO image, continue with the additional steps below.13. if youre installing from a 64 bit environment, goto EFI/Boot directory, if there is a bootx64.efi file in there, you need not worry anymore, youre done else;
14. locate and open install.wim in sources folder
15. copy bootx64.efi to the efi/boot directory of the USB removable disk
16. rename bootx64.efi to bootx64.efi.

17. Grab a drink, youre done.
IF NON UEFI / LEGACY ENVIRONMENT
For those who want to install in a non UEFI environment but the legacy/preUEFI days mode. follow the steps instead;
13. Goto start, type CMD or Command Prompt, rick click and run as administrator or ctrl + shift + left click / Enter.
14. type x: where x is the drive letter of the mounted ISO or of your USB removable disk. e.g d:
15. type cd boot to navigate into the x: oot directory
16: type bootsect /nt60 d:
Where d: is the drive letter of your USB removable disk drive.
